  • Vaxholm - the capital of the archipelago!

Vaxholm - just one hour away from Stockholm - is often referred to as the capital of the archipelago. Vaxholm consists of 70 islands and has about 11 000 inhabitants. Already in 1548 King Gustav Vasa ordered to build a fortress at the islet and a village started to grow. Beside the military activities Vaxholm also had a large fleet of fishingboats .The Baltic herring from Vaxholm, locally named "strömming", is still famous throughout the country. Why not come here and try it yourself? At the same time you can enjoy the bustling boat life and wander among the beautiful old buildings which are decorated with ornate-carvings. You reach Vaxholm by boat, bus or car from stockholm. The Touristoffice is open Monday to Friday 10 am to 3 pm, Saturdays and Sundays 11 am to 3 pm. It is closed 24th, 25th, 26th and 31st of December and 1st of January. In the summer you can rent a bike at the Touristoffice and explore the surroundings.
